Curator Conversation: Meteorites – 4.5 billion years of impact

Wednesday 2 May 2018, 2pm

On 2 May, Andrew Christy, Senior Curator (Mineralogy) from Queensland Museum will present Meteorites – 4.5 billion years of impact. The first solids in the Solar System were small particles which collided and merged to form larger objects: asteroids. Some grew to form the Earth and other planets; many more remained small. Leftover fragments from this time continue to hit the Earth to the present day as meteorites.

Da Vinci Machines – Leonardo’s Inventions Brought to Life

Only on until 27 May

Don't miss the Da Vinci Machines exhibition – only on until 27 May! This award-winning international touring exhibition showcases iconic machines and inventions inspired by Leonardo’s drawings. On loan from the Museum of Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, a vast array of machines are created from original da Vinci drawings bringing the mechanical concepts of this curious mind to life. Highlights include the bicycle, scuba suit, spring powered car, as well as flying machines where visitors may touch and set them in motion, combining a fascinating hands-on experience with an exploration of the principles he employed to create each machine. Visitors will also see digital prints of the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, The Annunciation, Lady with an Ermine and da Vinci’s self-portrait. Included with entry to museum.

Meteorites

On now

Visit the Museum to see meteorites, fragments of rock or iron from outer space, which survived the passage through the atmosphere to impact the surface of the Earth. Most incoming objects burn up in the air; meteorites are the remains that reach the ground.

This is my heritage

On now

Discover the profound connection that objects have to family, country and culture through the personal memories and experiences of 12 of Queensland’s Indigenous artists and educators. Through images and film, the exhibition reveals the surprising connections and strong spiritual links that can be explored when people engage with the collections from the Queensland Museum.
